i.e is the same as a GHOST 1.xx file)
Quick instructions (for those few of you who hate reading a manual <GG>)
to updating a previous GHOST 1.xx installation to GHOST BBS 2.00......
1) UnZIP all of the files in GHOST200.ZIP to a temporary directory.
2) Copy the files BULLET.MNU and BULLETT.MNU (as samples), along with
the files GHOST2.NWS, GHOST3.NWS, GHOSTT2.NWS and GHOSTT3.NWS to your
GHOST support file directory. Rename your GHOST 1.xx GHOST.NWS file
as GHOST1.NWS and GHOSTT.NWS as GHOSTT1.NWS. The new files are sample
files meant to demonstrate the multi-bulletin feature of GHOST 2.00.
Please feel free to edit these, add or subtract bulletins, etc. as
you wish.
3) Since there are quite a few main menu changes, I have written new HLP
files (Help). If you are using GHOST 1.xx HLP files, you might want
to replace them with these (in your support directory). If you have
customized the GHOSt HLP files, you might wish to use these as a
guide to make changes to your custom files.
4) Copy the files GHOST.WAX and GHSTUTIL.WAX to your \PROWIN\ASPECT
subdirectory, replacing the version 1.xx files of the same names.
5) Copy the files GHOSTRUN.WAX and GHOSTRM.WAX to your GHOST support
directory.
6) Copy GHOSTLOG.ZIP to your GHOST download directory.
7) Optional... if you feel comfortable doing so, open the file GHOST.USR
(in your \PROWIN\ASPECT subdirectory) using a text editor such as
Notepad or Deskedit. Locate the secion with the heading [Open Files],
and delete the entire section, heading and contents. Save the
modified USR file.
8) Load PCP/Win, and run the GHSTUTIL script. This will read your
GHOST.USR file, and present you with a dialog box showing your
current settings. Even if you do not want to change anything here,
select the "Update Settings" button. This will bring up a dialog box
asking for the maximum number of files to be allowed during a Zmodem
batch transfer. The default is 10. Enter a number here (or accept the
default 10) and press OK. This will convert your GHOST 1.xx USR file
to a GHOST 2.00 format USR file.
That's it... You will be ready to run GHOST. When you first run this
version, you will notice a big change immediately... before GHOST
begins, a dialog box appears with all kinds of settings for times, etc.
Most of this should be self-explanatory, but if not, read the GHOST.WRI
or GHOST.TXT files for more information on what the settings mean.
Optional.....
If you are comfortable editing the GHOST.USR file, you may want to make
some additional changes (they aren't necessary to the operation of GHOST
2.00, but make it run a little nicer <GG>)
First... if you haven't yet run the GHOST.WAX version 2.00 script, you
might want to add a section header, [Run Data] right after the [Start
Up] section of GHOST.USR. This does nothing more than keep the
configuration information all in one spot, for easier editing.
If you have already tried GHOST.WAX, the [Run Data] section will have
already been created for you. Locate this section, and move it to just
below the [Start Up] section at the top of the GHOST.USR file.
Second.... if you look at the [Start Up] section, you will notice a
couple of new lines at the end of it. The one of interest to us is the
one which reads....
ClearDisplay=
This line is used by GHOST 2.00 to determine which, if any, file
extensions should have the screen cleared (as opposed to scrolled)
between "pages" when they are displayed. If you like the way GHOST 1.xx
displayed files, then leave this alone.
However, if, like me, you found the GHOST 1.xx display of things such as
bulletins, and help files to be on the slow side (especially now, with
up to 99 possible NWS <bulletin> files on the system <G>), then you
might want to try clearing the screen between "pages" of these, for
increased display speed. I have my system set to clear the display for
Bulletins, the new user information file, and the help file. The line
for this in GHOST.USR is.....
ClearDisplay=NWS NUF HLP
The other added lines in the [Start Up] section of GHOST.USR are
internal.
Third... if you wish, you may add a line
pvt_dir=x:\xxxxx\xxxxx
for any level 3 user whom you might wish to have access to a private
directory (replace the x's above with the drive\path, of course <GG>)
Fourth.... to take advantage of the "alias" function for new mail, you
might want to locate the section headed [SYSOP] and add the line
alias=Gregg Hommel
(using your own name, of course <G>) if you are also listed on your
system by name. This way, when you log on as SYSOP, any new mail
addressed to your "real" name will also be flagged for you. If, under
your real name, you are set for a security level of 4 or 5, you might
also locate that section, and add the line
alias=SYSOP
to reverse the procedure when you log on under your own name.
That should about cover it. Hopefully, the manuals will be more
explanatory, but I know a VERY FEW of you <GG> just can't wait....
